Transitional Housing Success Story- Meet Gerardo

At Penny Lane Centers, our mission is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive—especially those who have experienced instability, loss, or limited support. Our work isn't just about programs or housing; it's about people. It's about standing alongside young adults as they navigate the often uncertain transition to independence, and providing not just a safety net—but a springboard.

Highlighting client success stories like Gerardo Almaguer Jr.’s reminds us why we do what we do. These stories are more than milestones—they are powerful reflections of resilience, growth, and hope. They offer a glimpse into what’s possible when someone is given the space to heal, the resources to rebuild, and the encouragement to keep moving forward, even when the path feels hard.

In our Transitional Housing Programs, we don’t expect perfection. Instead, we create space for learning, for second chances, and for the kind of personal development that can change the course of a life. The Witherbee program in North Hills is just one example of how young adults are stepping into their future with confidence—and with community behind them.

It’s our privilege to walk alongside young people like Gerardo, to witness their transformation, and to celebrate their victories. His story is one of quiet strength and steady progress—and we’re honored to share it with you (see below).

Gerardo’s Journey to Independence

My name is Gerardo Almaguer Jr., and I’ve been a part of the Witherbee Transitional Housing program here at Penny Lane for several years.  I’ve been involved with Penny Lane and it’s programs for the majority of my life. I want to start by expressing my deep gratitude for the benefits and resources they provide, as well as for the incredible team that has supported me with guidance and moral encouragement along the way.

Many people are afraid of failure, but what makes this program special is the space it provides to fall and get back up. That cushion has allowed someone like me to keep trying until I—and others—can see real progress. That’s an incredible gift.

Thanks to Penny Lane and the Witherbee program, I’ve been able to pursue and achieve several personal goals. I’m currently in school for HVAC at UEI, I’ve obtained my driver’s permit and am scheduled to take my driving test on June 3rd, and I’ve completed guard card training. I also recently purchased my dream car and secured employment at Whole Foods. I’ve been able to fund and work toward all of this myself—with the help of God and the ongoing support from Penny Lane, which has kept me motivated and focused.

When I first joined the program—and throughout much of my life—I was very guarded and kept to myself. But recently, I’ve grown more open and receptive. Over time, I’ve learned to let my walls down. Initially, I didn’t trust easily, but with patience and repeated chances, I came to see that the Management genuinely cared about me—not just as a “client,” but as a person. That made all the difference.

Thank you Mayra and the staff, past and present, and Penny Lane who helped me realize all this.
