At Penny Lane Centers, we are proud to recognize team members who demonstrate dedication, growth, and a deep commitment to the individuals and communities we serve. This month, we are excited to spotlight Tommy Howard, an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist with the UMCR Intensive Services Team. Prior to beginning his clinical career, Tommy built a successful career in the beverage industry, where he developed strong foundational skills and a deep appreciation for teamwork and accountability.
In 2019, he made the intentional decision to pursue a new professional path and began working toward his Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, which he earned in 2023. That same year, he began his clinical career with Penny Lane, bringing compassion, curiosity, and a strong commitment to growth to his role. His goals include making a meaningful impact while working with diverse populations, obtaining licensure, and building a long-term, fulfilling career with Penny Lane.
One of my favorite aspects of working at Penny Lane is being part of a collaborative and supportive environment where staff genuinely work together to help and uplift others. That spirit of teamwork strengthens the services we provide and creates a workplace where people feel supported and connected. Being surrounded by colleagues who share a common purpose makes the work incredibly meaningful and fulfilling.
Penny Lane’s investment in professional growth and development has made a meaningful impact on my career journey. Having access to unlimited training courses through Relias, along with the dedicated support needed to complete the 2,000 supervised hours required for licensure, provided both the knowledge and structure necessary to reach important professional milestones. These opportunities reflect Penny Lane’s commitment to empowering clinicians at every stage of their careers and fostering a culture of continuous learning and advancement.
People are often surprised to learn that I write poetry. Writing gives me a creative outlet to express thoughts and emotions that exist beyond my clinical work and professional passions. It provides a reflective space that allows me to process experiences and connect with creativity in a meaningful way.
Becoming a father was the most powerful emotional experience of my life. In that moment, everything shifted—my priorities, my sense of responsibility, and even how I saw myself. I felt an overwhelming mix of joy, pride, love, and humility, along with the realization that my life was no longer just about me. Fatherhood has made me more patient, more protective, and more determined to grow not just for myself, but for someone who now depends on me. It continues to shape my decisions, strengthen my resilience, and remind me daily of what truly matters.
The best advice I ever received was to always do the best I can with what I have. A bonus reminder that guides me daily is that you can learn from anyone, no matter what their age. These words shape how I approach my work and interactions, keeping me open, curious, and committed to doing my best.
I especially value Penny Lane’s emphasis on transparency, inclusiveness, diversity, and mutual respect. These principles create a workplace where people feel seen, supported, and empowered. I thrive in environments where diverse perspectives are welcomed and valued, and where collaboration is built on trust and mutual respect.
Above all, I am deeply grateful for faith, health, family, and every person who has touched my journey. I also feel truly honored to work alongside such passionate, reflective, and growth-driven professionals here at Penny Lane.
Tommy’s dedication to growth, compassion for others, and commitment to learning reflect the mission and values that guide Penny Lane Centers every day. We are grateful to have him as part of the UMCR team and look forward to the continued impact he will make in the lives of those we serve.
Congratulations Tommy!
