August was a month filled with meaningful connections, celebrations, community engagement, and moments that reminded us why the work we do at Penny Lane matters. From welcoming longtime community partners for a special visit and connecting with neighbors at National Night Out to celebrating an incredible colleague as she begins her well-earned retirement, our teams found plenty of reasons to come together. We also got a glimpse into how members of our Penny Lane family spent their summer recharging, reconnecting with loved ones, and making memories beyond the workplace.
This month’s Past Events also highlights the impact our teams continue to make in the communities we serve. One powerful UMCR success story demonstrates how compassion, collaboration, and simply being there for someone during a moment of crisis can help create a pathway toward safety and hope. Whether we were strengthening partnerships, celebrating one another, prioritizing wellness, connecting with our communities, or helping someone take an important step forward, August was another reminder that some of Penny Lane’s most meaningful moments happen when we show up, connect, and care for one another.

Penny Lane Centers had the honor of welcoming Logix Federal Credit Union Board Members and leadership for a special site visit, giving their team an opportunity to experience firsthand the meaningful work happening every day across our organization.
During the visit, our guests had the opportunity to hear directly from some of our clients as they shared powerful stories of resilience, hope, challenges overcome, and personal success. Hearing these experiences firsthand offered a meaningful glimpse into the impact that compassion, resources, and the right support can have on an individual’s life and future.
Our dedicated staff also shared their experiences and the passion that drives the work they do each day. Team members spoke about Penny Lane’s ongoing commitment to meeting people where they are and connecting children, youth, adults, and families with the services, resources, and opportunities they need to overcome challenges and move toward brighter futures.
At Penny Lane, we believe supporting our clients means looking at the whole person and recognizing that meaningful change often requires more than one service or solution. The Logix visit provided an opportunity to see that commitment in action and to better understand how our programs, staff, and community partnerships come together to make a lasting difference.
We are incredibly grateful to the Logix Board Members and staff who took the time to visit, listen, learn, and connect with our clients and team. Logix has been a valued supporter of Penny Lane throughout the years, and partnerships like this help strengthen our ability to continue serving our communities. Thank you, Logix, for believing in our mission, investing in the people we serve, and continuing to be an important part of the Penny Lane family!

Debra Eidum has been such a special part of our Penny Lane family since November 2013. We started with the organization around the same time, both beginning our journeys in North Hills, never knowing then that those early days would lead to such a wonderful and lasting friendship. Over the years, Debra has been incredibly dedicated and exceptional at what she does, always bringing care, commitment, and heart to her work and to the people around her.
While her contributions to Penny Lane have been tremendous, what I will cherish most is the friendship we built along the way. Her kindness, laughter, support, and friendship have meant so much to me throughout the years. When you spend more than a decade working alongside someone, you share countless moments—the busy days, the challenging ones, the celebrations, the laughter, and all of the little memories in between that ultimately become such an important part of the journey.
Debra’s retirement is also an opportunity to celebrate the lasting impact she has made at Penny Lane. Thirteen years represents countless lives touched, colleagues supported, challenges overcome, and memories created. The relationships she formed and the dedication she brought to her work are part of the legacy she leaves behind, and we are incredibly grateful for everything she has given to our organization and our Penny Lane community.
Of course, retirement is not just about looking back—it is about getting excited for everything still ahead! After so many years of giving her time, energy, and talents to others, Debra has more than earned the opportunity to slow down, enjoy new adventures, spend time doing the things she loves, and embrace whatever comes next. We hope this next chapter is filled with plenty of relaxation, laughter, memorable experiences, and maybe a few mornings when she gets to happily ignore the alarm clock.
This retirement certainly isn’t goodbye, but rather the beginning of a very well-deserved new chapter. While Penny Lane will miss Debra’s experience, dedication, warm presence, and the difference she made throughout her years here, we couldn’t be happier for her as she begins this exciting next adventure. Congratulations and Happy Retirement, Debra! Thank you for 13 incredible years of memories, friendship, and dedication to the Penny Lane family. You will always be part of PL! 🎉💖

This summer, I embarked on an unforgettable adventure aboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, and it was truly one of the most exciting experiences of my life. From breathtaking ocean views and thrilling onboard activities to amazing destinations, every day felt like a new chapter in an incredible journey. The moment I stepped onto the ship, I was amazed by its size and beauty. It felt like a floating city, complete with restaurants, entertainment venues, swimming pools, and endless activities for guests of all ages. The friendly crew welcomed everyone with smiles, making us feel at home from the very beginning.
One of the highlights of the trip was exploring the different ports of call. We visited Costa Maya, Mexico; Roatán, Honduras; Cozumel, Mexico; and CocoCay, Bahamas. Each destination offered a unique experience, from relaxing on beautiful beaches to discovering local culture, food, shops, and attractions. Every stop brought something new to explore and created memories that I will cherish for years to come.
Life onboard was just as exciting as the destinations themselves! During the day, I enjoyed swimming, playing games, sipping margaritas, and participating in activities organized by the cruise staff. There was never a dull moment. Whether enjoying live music, watching spectacular performances, or simply relaxing on deck as the sun set over the ocean, every experience felt special. The dining was another favorite part of the vacation, with an incredible variety of options ranging from casual snacks to elegant dinners. We especially enjoyed the late-night pizza and frequent stops at the Sprinkles ice cream station!
Some of the most memorable moments came from celebrating important milestones with the people I love, including my daughter’s and husband’s birthdays and my 19th wedding anniversary. Watching the sun rise and set over the open sea was breathtaking. With endless blue water stretching toward the horizon, those quiet moments offered a chance to slow down, reflect, and appreciate the beauty of the world around us.
Beyond the fun and excitement, this vacation reminded me of an important part of wellness that can sometimes get lost in our busy lives: the importance of stepping away, recharging, and making time for the people and experiences that bring us joy. Away from everyday routines and distractions, we shared laughter, adventures, meals, and meaningful conversations. That time together brought us closer and allowed us to return home with wonderful memories and a renewed sense of gratitude.
Wellness doesn’t always have to look like exercise, meditation, or a traditional self-care routine. Sometimes wellness is exploring someplace new, watching a sunset, laughing with family, enjoying an ice cream cone, or simply giving yourself permission to unplug from the responsibilities of everyday life. As we look back on the summer adventures of our Penny Lane family, stories like this are a wonderful reminder that rest, connection, joy, and making memories are all important parts of taking care of ourselves.
As the cruise came to an end, it was hard to say goodbye to such an amazing adventure. My Royal Caribbean summer vacation was filled with excitement, relaxation, discovery, family, and unforgettable experiences. More than just a vacation, it was an opportunity to reconnect, recharge, celebrate, and appreciate some of life’s most meaningful moments.
It truly was an epic summer adventure—and one I will never forget! 🌊🚢☀️

National Night Out at Northridge Park, hosted by LAPD’s Devonshire Division, was a wonderful success and an opportunity for community members, first responders, local organizations, and service providers to come together in a fun and welcoming environment. The annual event is designed to strengthen partnerships between law enforcement, emergency personnel, community organizations, and the neighborhoods they serve while promoting safety, preparedness, and community connection.
Throughout the evening, attendees had an opportunity to meet representatives from organizations providing important services and resources throughout the community. The Southern California Preparedness Foundation was among those in attendance, sharing helpful information and practical resources to help individuals and families prepare for emergencies and disasters. Events like National Night Out make important safety information more accessible while giving community members the chance to connect directly with the people and organizations working in their neighborhoods.
Penny Lane Centers’ UMCR team was proud to participate in the event and spend time connecting with members of the community they serve. Staff enjoyed talking with attendees, sharing information about Penny Lane’s services, answering questions, and strengthening relationships outside of the traditional service setting. Being present at community events allows our teams to meet people where they are and helps ensure individuals and families know that support is available when they need it.
For our UMCR team in particular, building trust and familiarity within the community is an important part of the work they do. Creating opportunities for residents to interact with staff in a relaxed and positive environment can help strengthen those relationships before a moment of crisis ever occurs. It also allows Penny Lane to continue building connections with first responders and other community partners who share our commitment to supporting the safety and well-being of our neighborhoods.
National Night Out is about more than one evening—it is about creating stronger, safer, and more connected communities. When residents, first responders, service providers, and community organizations have opportunities to come together, we strengthen the partnerships that help communities thrive. Penny Lane was proud to be part of this year’s celebration and looks forward to continuing to build relationships, share resources, and show up for the communities we serve.

A local church became an unexpected place of hope when a man walked through its doors carrying the weight of hopelessness and thoughts of ending his life. Church staff quickly recognized the seriousness of the situation after he shared that he had been experiencing suicidal thoughts for several weeks and had considered overdosing. Overwhelmed by housing instability, isolation, and a lack of support from family or friends, the individual tearfully expressed that he no longer believed his circumstances would improve, despite being connected to community services.
Recognizing that he needed immediate support, church staff contacted law enforcement, and Penny Lane Centers’ UMCR team was dispatched to assist. Upon arrival, team members met privately with the individual, creating a safe and supportive environment where he could openly share what he was experiencing. With compassion and without judgment, the team completed a suicide risk assessment, explored his current stressors and available resources, and worked to identify the safest next steps.
During the conversation, the individual spoke openly about his feelings of hopelessness and uncertainty about the future. Although he did not have access to the means he had previously considered using, the team recognized that his ongoing suicidal thoughts and level of emotional distress required immediate mental health intervention. Rather than facing that moment alone, he now had people beside him who were listening, offering support, and helping him navigate a path toward care.
Through supportive engagement and collaboration, the individual demonstrated insight into his mental health needs and agreed to seek additional help voluntarily. The UMCR team transported him to a local Mental Health Urgent Care Center, assisted him with the check-in process, and ensured a warm handoff to facility staff for continued evaluation, treatment, and support.
This response reflects the important role UMCR plays in meeting individuals during some of their most vulnerable moments. Crisis intervention is not simply about responding to an immediate situation—it is about creating connection, restoring a sense of safety, and helping someone take the next step toward the care they need.
What began as a moment of profound hopelessness became an opportunity for compassion, connection, and support. Through the quick actions of the church staff, collaboration with community partners, and the compassionate response of the UMCR team, this individual was able to move from crisis toward care. Sometimes hope begins with something as simple as knowing that, in your most difficult moment, someone is there to listen, support you, and help you find a way forward.
