The UMCR night shift received a call regarding a disturbance at the Tarzana Treatment Center. Upon arrival, UMCR observed an individual sleeping on a bench outside the facility. Approaching with care and sensitivity, UMCR attempted to engage and help. Initially, the individual was unresponsive to support; however, through continued efforts by both UMCR and Tarzana staff, the individual became cooperative and receptive.
UMCR conducted a thorough exploration of the individual’s immediate concerns and the factors contributing to the current crisis. Through active listening and empathetic dialogue, the team learned that the individual had left the detox program earlier in the day but now regretted that decision and expressed a desire to return. UMCR responded with empathy, validating the individual’s feelings and experiences. Basic needs were addressed with the provision of water, snacks, blankets, and a beanie. Crisis counseling was provided, and the team also explored the individual's spiritual needs as a potential source of support.
UMCR also inquired about close relatives and past service connections to determine additional support options. Efforts were made to locate safe sleeping arrangements for the night, and a follow-up plan was discussed for the following day.
The UMCR day team arrived to assist the individual and were easily able to build a rapport due to the night team’s mindful interactions. Through speaking with the individual, we learned that they had also lost their phone. The individual requested that we accompany them into the treatment facility to inquire about re-admittance. The UMCR team obliged and fortunately, the treatment center was able to offer the individual re-entry within the hour, which they gladly accepted. Luckily the UMCR team was also able to locate and charge the individual's lost phone before departing. UMCR wished the individual well and was thanked for their continued dedication and support.
