The Maui Wild Fires

Helping Communities in Need

A few weeks ago, the island of Maui, Hawaii, suffered from wildfires that left destruction, devastation and ruin in its path. The Lahaina wildfire was one of four blazes that broke out on Maui on Aug. 8th. I know, as I watched the news coverage my heart broke for the people of Maui.  People sought refuge in the waters offshore.  It was as if we were watching a disaster movie, but this time there was no resolution or happy ending.  Not only were homes and business lost, but lives were lost as well.

Lahaina, which translated means "cruel sun," is now almost completely gone. The economic and cultural heart of the island was reduced to ashes in the deadliest US wildfire in more than 100 years. At least 114 people have died in the western Maui wildfires and more than 1,000 people remain missing as of the writing of this article.  The pain and sorrow being felt by the people of Maui is indescribable.

Many of us have had the pleasure of visiting this island paradise.  We take in the lush landscape, beautiful waterfalls, and swim in the delicious waters . . . and then we return home.  For the islanders they cannot escape the havoc that was unleashed.  Maui is a treasure that needs to be preserved and restored.

As always, it is so important to stand with those who are hurting.  If you are curious about how you can help, here are a few options that will help this relief effort.
